Thrifty Thursday: Thrift Store Finds

Well, here's a post that has been MIA for quite a while.  We haven't had the money to go shopping at the used stores, so we've been avoiding them, and yard sales for the last little bit.

But, Tuesday, my daughter for her braces off (yay!!!) and better yet they did the X-rays to make sure her bite and everything was good and they said that her X-rays looked good, including that they couldn't see any cavities in her teeth (course we won't know 100% until next week at the kid's dental appointments).  Since she was so good during her appointment, we figured we could spare a few dollars to go the used store and see if we could get her a reward.

And I did find her a stuffed princess doll for 1.00 (better yet I found out by my daughter dressing her up that she fits into 18" doll clothes, so that might make Christmas even easier yet :) but then I went and looked around wondering if I'd find anything cheap that was on my yard sale and thrift store list.

I seriously hit pay dirt!  I've been looking for a new rice cooker as the bowl on my old one is just plain shot (non-stick coating is gone, aluminum is starting to pit, etc) and once I found that I couldn't get a replacement bowl for my old one, I figured I'd have to get a new one.  Unfortunately, the cheapest I was able to find was one for 15.00 or over on clearance and I didn't have the money when I'd see them.  So I was looking at having to pay 30.00 to 50.00 for a new one.

And then I found the one above.  A brand new rice cooker.  I looked inside.  It's never been used, still has the original cord securing thingies in place and even has the original rice paddle to serve the rice.  It's a lot bigger than my old one (8 cups vs. 4) and the best part?  A 6.00 price tag!!!

So, yay!  Bargain shopping went well for me this week :).  How about you?  Found anything cool at the used stores/yard sales lately?

  1. Great find on that rice cooker! I was blessed to find several more summer tops, a grill pan that goes onto your BBQ grill to do your veggies on for .99 and several other great find on things that we need around the house. :)

  2. Nice! I'd love to find one of those trays for the grill. That and one of those trays you put in the bottom to use charcoal instead of gas when you want. Course, first I need to get to a point where I buy propane for the grill, but I can dream anyway ;).

  3. Today I stopped at a yard sale and got two bags of yarn for $3 total. Even though I'd told myself NO MORE YARN, I couldn't pass this up! A lot of it is pink, which is a color I'm going to be using a lot for granddaughter that's coming in October. I also got a great deal on a baby swing for a swing set. It was only $2 and had the buckets and everything in tact.

    1. Yarn for a good price is always hard to pass up :). Congrats on finding yarn in colors you can use right away too!

  4. Great finds y'all. I picked up a cake carrier -- I think it's Tupperware but don't know for sure, and another carrier where I can flip the bottom because it's divided into wedges and can be used for a vegetable platter or flip it back and put other things on it. Total cost:$1.50. Dorothy

    1. Look on the lid and on the bottom of the cake carrier. If it's Tupperware it'll have the word Tupperware on it somewhere visible (I collect Tupperware, so this is one area I'm knowledgeable in ;).

1.50 is a great price for a cake carrier, no matter the brand, though. I got one, but I think mine cost like 3.00 when I bought it. I love it to put layer cakes in on the table as it keeps my son out of the frosting *laugh*.

    2. I checked and the large cake carrier was Tupperware, it was written on the handle, and the one with the flip tray wasn't. So at 75 cents apiece ($1.50 total) that was my deal of the month. I'm a "frosting" girl myself. To me the cake is only a vehicle to hold frosting :).

  5. I haven't been shopping because in the camper, space is so limited. I have been trying to figure out ways to use things I have for more than one job. So, I've been using my grill basket to drain lettuce after I wash it, for one. I've also been weeding out even more items and putting them into storage and pulling food items out of storage to use up as we eat up what's in the camper.

I love your lettuce photos (on another post). We have also been eating so much lettuce--it's amazing how much we have.

I'm having trouble accessing enough internet to read blogs, so was glad to get a chance to catch up with yours this afternoon at the library. Seems like you've been doing very well. I'm glad.

  6. All thrift stores around here have nothing but junk. I did find that salad dressing container awhile ago but that is it. I love my rice cooker, it is the best tool for me. I could never make rice that wasn't hard , sticky, or mushy. Cheryl

    1. I'm the same way. I've tried again and again to make rice on the stove top. Tried all the different tips and tricks to make it work and I still just can't cook rice on the stove top to save my life. I'd be lost without a rice cooker and I use one ALL THE TIME :).

  7. Unfortunately we had to travel to prepare to say goodbye to my "mom" from FL to De. We traveled with six carry on bags...duffel size and with it just being me and the kids we struggled to carry them on the amtrak platforms etc. I realized our need for some real luggage with wheels and we are going home with a little more than we came with. We went to a church thrift store and it was their 5 year anniversary and everything was 50 percent off. We told the lady what we needed she showed us a shed full of luggage. I didn't have much to spend at all but we ended up getting three suitcases for 10.00. I am not a label girl but I did notice two of them are liz Claiborne . We won't get home till Monday but we picked up my husband a father's day gift from there as well for 2.50. My daughter got a shirt for a buck and my son found a magazine to read on way home for .25. Star wars.

    1. Sorry you had to take such a sad trip, but glad you were able to get the luggage you needed for a price you could afford to pay. Have a safe return trip home :).

  8. I went shopping at a thrift store yesterday (my day off), and found a nice summer shirt. I had points at this particular thrift store and received $1 off making it under $5!
