This Week's Shopping Trips

I spent 100.00 (103.15 to be exact) on groceries this week.  Yup, I went over by that much.  But, I came to the conclusion that I needed to and my husband agreed.  Basically we needed meat and there were some awesome sales at Carrs this week, including 5.00 value packs of chicken on 5.00 Friday, so we decided that spending an extra 50.00 to get meat and things we were running desperately low on was necessary.

The only thing I picked up at Fred Meyer was my free Quaker oat flats from Freebie Friday a couple of weeks ago (yay!) and a can of cat food to make my life easier about the freebie, since I checked out at U-Scan (I paid pocket change for that).  The photos of that aren't seen because I forgot about them, honestly, until I found the bag in the front seat of my car later that same day (oops).
The Carrs trip is broken up into two photos because I didn't want to haul soda and cat litter upstairs only to haul it back downstairs again.

I then went to Carrs on Friday with both kids in tow and still managed to stick to my list.  I was so proud of myself *laugh*.  I shopped the ad hard to fill in holes that we needed to fill.

So, let's break it down.

5.00 Friday Items
  • Bounty Paper Towels
  • Value Packs of chicken (no weight limit)
  • Tidy Cat cat litter (no limit on those, so I got two)
Other items:
  • Coke 2 liter bottles on sale 1.49 each when you bought five, so I stocked up for the next couple of weeks (glad I did too as my son is back on his "I must have fresh soda, take three sips and then you must pour it out and get me more soda" kick *sigh*).
  • Pork steaks, three packages, 1.99 lb, personalized price
  • Hot dog buns on sale 1.99 (for son.  I need to hit the Franz outlet one of these days to stock up again)
  • Tortillas 1.69 personalized price
  • Big value box of baby wipes 10.49 personalized price
  • Lays chips, free with coupon (the coupon maxed out at 1.49, but the cashier said "uh it says free, so no" and punched in the full price of the item.  I thought that was nice of them).
  • Two things of reduced hamburger patties 7.98 for both
So, yeah, after all coupons were applied (and personalized prices and things) I spent a total of 103.15 on groceries.  I'm not going to try to make up the 50.00 difference from my reduced grocery budget as my husband and I decided that we would allocate 100.00 or less to restock the meat as well as we could.  So, really I have 50.00 left to spend on meat if I need to (hoping to make do with what I got, though).

How did you do this week?

  1. We have the same thing happen with buying meat. I have to spend extra money restocking the freezer every once in a while, when we get low. Save the extra $50 for the next round, or use it to buy some sale meat as you find the deals. Either way, you'll probably use it.

This was grocery shopping week for us (we're trying to go every 2nd week as well right now). Awesome deals I found included English cucumber 2 for $0.47 each, pasta sauce 12 cans for $0.88/can, bottled water 4 cases for $0.97/15 bottles (used for emergency supply and for day trips), bagels 6 packs for $0.44/4 bagels, pasta 8 bags for $1/900g, and English muffins 8 packs for $1/6 muffins. Thankful there were some great deals on items we were low on!

    1. Well, Blogger ate my reply, so let's try again ;).

I can't believe you got things so cheap! Especially the bottled water! Things like that, due to shipping, cost more than I can believe up here...especially for water (like 5.00 for a case of bottled water).

  2. If you didn't spend now when the meat was on sale, image how much that meat would have cost in a few weeks. I buy meat on sale, not when I need it, bet most of your readers do too. Bad enough paying the sale price but the regular price makes it hard on the budget. Cheryl

    1. Good point. I haven't paid full price for meat in years. I can't imagine having to actually pay the awful prices for full priced meat right now. That would definitely hurt!

  3. An acquaintance texted me today that she'd bring me some farm fresh eggs for 1.50 a dozen, so I'm happy about that. I'm going to get four dozen.

    1. Wow! Farm fresh eggs up here ALWAYS go for 5.00 a dozen, thus out of my price range. I'd jump on 1.50 for any eggs, let alone farm fresh ones. Great deal!!!

  4. BTW, Erika, I've been reading your blog for months now. I really enjoy your down-to-earth posts. I'm a mom, a grandma, and a gardener. I love to bake, too. You totally have me beat with the canning; it's not something I've done. I really like seeing what you've canned, though.

My favorite posts of yours were the ones where you showed all the Christmas gifts you had made. That was so fun, and I was happy for you to be able to use your creativity to provide gifts. Your posts were actually like little gifts bringing Christmas joy to your readers.

  5. A bit more about my great chicken deal I mentioned in my "Frugal Friday" comment. The commissary doesn't mark down chicken on set days - so it's luck of the draw if I happen to be there when they do (other types of meat go into a reduced meat freezer).

Anyway, they mostly sell Tyson products but have a small Perdue section. I spotted the telltale orange stickers denoting "reduced" and headed over. But, the kicker was that the vendor was there handing $1 and $1.50 off coupons per package (depending on product) AND $3 off 3 packages coupons!

I made sure to pick the cheapest packages. So, I was getting chicken drumsticks and thighs that were reduced to $1.01 per package (price varied slightly per package) and could use the $1 off coupon. Then, boneless skinless chicken for just over $1.50 and got to use the $1.50 off coupon. And I was able to stack the $3 off 3 coupons on top of it! So, I also got a whole roaster that was reduced to $3.61 for which the $1 off and $3 off 3 coupon applied. I could mix and match packages, so I ended up getting 6 packages of boneless/skinless, 3 packages of drumsticks, 3 packages of thighs, and 1 whole roaster for a grand total of...well, heck, now that I look back at my receipt, it was TOTALLY FREE! Yes, I am the crazy chicken lady! Whoo hoo!

Thanks to that deal and my other coupons/rebates, I got all of my groceries for the next 2-3 weeks for a family of 4 for $169.10! Bam! Chicken, tons of fresh fruit & veggies, lots of yogurt, lunch meat, tons of cereal, granola bars, tuna & salmon pouches, mac & cheese, applesauce, bbq sauce, baked beans, cream of mushroom soup, cottage cheese, butter, ice cream, & household items like rubber gloves, trash bags, and septic tank cleaner.

    1. Free chicken. Wow! I haven't been able to score free meat with coupons in YEARS and I mean YEARS. Good for you! I would proudly wear the badge of "crazy chicken lady" for that much free chicken *laugh*.

Nice price on the groceries too! Good for you :).

    2. I told my husband I'd find a way to fit it all in the freezer one way or the other! This made me so extremely excited, I began to wonder if I have a problem. :)

    3. Free chicken, I think, is a problem we should all have from time to time *laugh*.

  6. Good deals again for you!I wish our grocery stores would have better prices on beef, chicken is often $1 a lb, so that's something we get often, but beef, whew! $5+ a lb for anything usually.

Since we are out of town, didn't grocery shop, but I managed to find 2 pairs of athletic shorts for my son for $5 each, and can handshake and dry overnight until we get home, whew.

I'll have to try that golden syrup, I am so curious!

    1. Yeah, we're in the same boat. I can sometimes run into chicken for .99 lb on sale, but that's about it. Pork can go down SOMETIMES to about 1.49 lb, but rarely. Beef is still 4.99 lb or higher on sale, although I can get hamburger cheaper than that by going to a local butcher (3.69 to 3.89 lb depending) or I can get it with reduced tags for about 3.00 lb sometimes. Otherwise, unfortunately, beef is still gold plated.
