Shopping Goals: March 2016

Well, as accomplishments go, I'd chalk up last month's shopping goals as a win.  I didn't need to buy the laundry soap making supplies because I made do with what I had along with a 4 lb box of baking soda I did purchase (that laundry soap I'm using to wash my husband's, my daughter's and my clothes and bedding in as my son's skin is so bad we're sticking to the Seventh Generation for him exclusively).

The one thing I wasn't able to purchase was a second bag of water softening salt.  Every time I would go to the stores trying to get it cheaper than like 9.00, I would hit road blocks as everyone was out of the salt.  So, I just decided to wait and purchase the second bag this month instead.  So, that is the one thing that is getting transferred onto this month's list.

March usually sees things like cabbage and potatoes go on sale cheap for St. Patrick's Day, so I'm hoping to score some of that cheap this month.  I've got my mind open to good sales on corned beef, but am not counting on it at this point, so I've got sort of a "wait and see" type of outlook when it comes to that.

I am, however, running low on beef, which it isn't like I had much of it to begin with, so I'm going to be watching for good prices on that this month.   But, I'm not going to commit myself to buying any as I'm not sure what the sales will do here the next bit.

So, in the meantime here's the shopping goals for this month.

Shopping Goals:  March 2016

Amazon.com (these are already paid for with gift cards that I had applied to my account).
Disclaimer:  The following contains associate links to Amazon.  If you order through these links I get a small commission from Amazon for the sale.  Ordering through these links, however, does not cost you anything extra.  If you order through these links, thank you!
I found a new friend this last week by the name of Dawn, who got me in touch with a Cyclical Vomiting Group online (the condition my daughter suffers from).  While reading up on some of the research having to do with CVS, I found out about the above two vitamins that are supposed to not only help with CVS, but also other ailments, such as my stomach condition, so I ordered enough for my daughter and I to try.  And through Amazon, the CoQ10 vitamin ESPECIALLY is cheaper than at the store, so I was happy to find them on there.
Regular Grocery Stores :
  • Water Softening Salt
  • Cabbage (if sales are good)
  • Potatoes (if sales are good)
  • Corned Beef  (if sales are good)
  • Butter (if sales are good)
  • Beef (if sales are good)
  • Easter Candy for kids (Smarties for Easter Eggs)
  • Printer cartridges (forgot that I was out of ink until I looked about possibly printing some coupons.  Go me!)
 Bulk Stores
  • Butter (if regular stores do not have good enough sales during month)
  • Garbage Bags
And there you.  My shopping goals for this month.  Hopefully I'll be able to work it into my grocery budget without too much trouble.

    1. As far as I can tell with Cartwheel you need either a Redcard that you load the coupons to or you have to use your smartphone. I don't have either of those things. I had a Redcard until the whole security breach debacle and how badly they handled it, especially since my husband was one of the lucky people who had to get a new card issued to him by the credit card companies for making the mistake of getting a gallon of milk there on his way home one day. I cancelled it at that point and when I go to Target I take cash now a days.

I know it seems kind of stupid, but that's the way I do things now :).

  2. You can print the cartwheel from the website. Click on the barcode up at the top of the screen.

    1. Great. New problem. Forgot I was about out of printer ink. And I need it for upcoming paperwork. Darn.

Right, I'll be adding "ink cartridges" to my list of things to get this month too *laugh*.

  3. Butter is on my shopping list this month as well. I wasn't able to pick up as much as I like during the holidays so I'm hoping the Easter sales bring good prices.

    1. Yeah, it seemed like the butter deals were short around the holidays up here too. I refuse to pay 4.00 or more per lb of butter, which is what it goes for up here, so I watch sales carefully.

    2. Pretty much $4 a lb here in Virginia too. I think there must have been something going on with dairy in general, because milk and cheese got sky high, and its just now starting to drop, after more than a year. Hoping eggs drop too. $4 for 18 is rediculious.

Hope you can get the cartwheel to print!

    3. Funny, butter is about $4 (up to $4.79) regular price in Chicago, too. Hmmm. Eggs are about $3.79/dozen regular price now, but sales still go down to $2-$2.50/dozen. I miss the days of 0.99/dozen eggs!

    4. It is crazy that you are paying my regular prices for things down south. That seems somehow wrong *laugh*. Yeah, if we're lucky we get sales for about 2.00 per dozen on the eggs, but we've never, in my experience had eggs anywhere NEAR .99 dozen here.

Our butter will go on sale sometimes for 2.50 for the Fred Meyer brand, but that's as cheap, outside of the bulk stores, as I've seen it. Some of the name brands, like Challenge go for over 5.00 per lb which I don't do *laugh*.

  4. I had a dentist appointment yesterday morning and was in a hurry to get back home to the baby (I'm a 40 yr old grandmother raising my 10 month old grand daughter...and might I add that she is absolutely adorable and perfect), anyway lol....I was really tired and needed to stop at the store and get some milk. I almost changed my mind but went in anyway while I was out and about. I am so glad that I did! The store had chicken legs and chicken thighs marked down to .50 a pound and the expiration date on them is for April! I asked the store clerk if there was something wrong with them, she said no, that they had accidently ordered way more than they could possibly sell by accident and they needed to get rid of them. I loaded up! They also had ground chuck marked down to $1.98 a pound-for the same exact reason. I also needed graham cracker pie crust as I have a ton of different flavored puddings that I need to get used up and thought chocolate pie and banana pie would be something different. I thought about just buying graham crackers and making my own crust as it would probably be cheaper. I had a lazy moment and decided to go ahead and buy 10 pre-made crusts. I am sooooo glad I did that also because when they rang them up at the register they rang up at a marked down price of .40 each even though they weren't marked on the shelf at that price. I woandered over to the milk and to my surprise it was on sale for 1.79 a gallon but is not in the store ad. Yessss!!!! The grocery store angels were looking down on me today! Lol. I then headed towards the baby aisle for diapers and baby wipes. I was hoping for more sales but found no such luck, everything was regular priced. That's okay though because I found some awesome sales on some much needed things and have been gloating ever since. I am so happy about the sales I ran into.....please excuse me while this granny struts :)

    1. Correction: The April expiration date is for the pie crusts, not the chicken lol, that would be some long lasting incredible hulk chicken ;)

    2. *Laugh* honestly, with the way vacuum sealing is getting better and better it wouldn't have surprised me to learn that we'd found a way to keep chicken fresh that long. Our local bulk store sells chicken legs in vacuum sealed containers...kind of like Food Saver heavy plastic. They are more expensive then just buying chicken parts on sale at say Safeway/Carrs, but they last FOREVER in the freezer without getting freezer burned. And they stack pretty flat because of the containers they are in. I keep thinking of buying some more of those when I run low on chicken again...which by the state of my freezers isn't going to be too soon *laugh*.

I can not BELIEVE the awesome deals you scored there, though! I'm in awe! I think I would have had a heart attack from sheer joy at finding everything marked down like that and then the milk being on sale too!!! Wow! Glad you were able to get such awesome prices!

  5. Erika,
Are you going to be able to stick to your $50/week like last month, or are your emptying freezers going to force you into raising that? Just curious--I wondered how the freezers were holding out.

Also, IMO, cash is never stupid. I tend to spend less when I use it, even if one or two items end up being more expensive. I'm not sure why, but I think it's because I'm a visual person--if I see and hold the cash in my hand, I am more aware of what I'm spending.

    1. I was forced this week to do a "stock up" type of trip for the freezer (I'll post that up here in a few) and had to do one week of going back to my 150.00 for this week to do it. The rest of the month, however, I'm planning on going back down. Luckily the kids start Spring Break next Friday, which will actually save me money as I can serve things at home my daughter will eat here, but not take in a packed lunch and I can make my son like an individual serving of french fries instead of worrying about having to buy microwave ones for school. It makes life easier in the feeding area anyway. Now SHOPPING and cleaning...that might get interesting with my son home, but I'll make it work :).

  6. My mom and I did a huge shopping trip for a number of items this week. I found some really good deals as well! I bought 6 margarine containers for $0.88 each (normal sale price is $1 each), 6 packages of cheese slices for $1.88/24 slice pack (my freezer stock was getting low and my family loves grilled cheese sandwiches), 3 large packages of boneless, skinless chicken breast from Costco that had $4 off each pack (I found the smallest packs, making them under $20/pack), 6 loaves of bread for $1.33/loaf (normal price I pay is around $2/loaf), 3 cans of baked beans for $0.72/can, 4 packages of English muffins for $0.88/pack of 6 (normal sale price $1), 2 bricks of butter for $2.97/brick (normally closer to $4/brick), a bag of potatoes for $1.88/10lb bag and 2 big bags of mixed apples (easily over 3 lbs each) on clearance for $1/bag (3lb bags of apples are close to $4/bag right now). I also stocked up on some basic pantry items, like a 20lb bag of AP flour, huge bag of chocolate chips, toilet paper, cat litter, dry cat food and a few other items that were low. I used $30 worth of loyalty points to help offset some of the cost. My mother also paid for about half as we will be giving a bunch of groceries to my brother, who is also struggling financially, when he comes for Easter.

So far, we made 2 packs of the fresh chicken breasts into chicken souvlaki for the freezer, and I have dehydrated some of the apples, along with another batch of fruit leather. I plan to dehydrate more of the apples, but some are for eating fresh as well.

I'm sure there are more things I will need to buy, not to mention stocking up with good sales, but a good chunk has already been purchased already for this month!

    1. Wow! Those are some great prices! I'm impressed :).

So, the chicken souvlaki will freeze okay? I was wondering that. I would like to make a bulk thing of it (terrible at remembering to marinade things) and then freeze some for later. How long, on average, do you freeze it for and it come out tasting okay?

    2. As long as you use chicken that has not been previously frozen, you can prepare it in the marinade then freeze it. I have a Food Saver, which helps immensely with the freezer burn issue. However, I would say it will keep about the same length of time as regular chicken if your using freezer bags, though. The oil in the marinade may help even help protect it a bit more. Chicken souvlaki is a huge favourite in our family (even my daughter loves it), so it never lasts too long in our freezer anyways. We seem to make it once every two weeks or so, and sometimes more frequently, especially because it is such a quick and easy meal for us.

    3. Oh you can use chicken that has been previously frozen for pretty much anything and refreeze it. All we get up here is previously frozen everything, so trust me on this. I do it ALL THE TIME *laugh*. I will give marinating the chicken and freezing it then. Thank you :). That'll make my life easier in the long run for sure.
